I watched a really great movie last night. Maidentrip, a documentary about Laura Dekker and her solo circumnavigation to become the youngest person ever to make a lap of the planet. It was great on so many levels but what resonated with me most was that when I was a teenager I read the book Dove by Robin Lee Graham, the California kid who set off at 16 to become the youngest person ever to sail alone around the world. I could not get enough of the book and a series of articles that came out in National Geographic, but when the movie came out with Deborah Raffin playing a starring role I was as good as gone. She was everything I dreamed of; long hair, hazel eyes and legs that wouldn’t quit. The book and the movie propelled me off the couch, out the door and around the world multiple times. As I watched Maidentrip I was wondering if Laura’s story would still have the same effect on a teenage boy these days.
Ayer noche vi una película verdaderamente increíble. Maidentrip, un documental sobre Laura Dekker y su circunnavegación en solitario que la convirtió en la persona más joven del planeta en dar la vuelta al mundo. Fue estupenda en muchos sentidos, pero a mí personalmente lo que me llamó más la atención fue que me recordó cuando yo era un adolescente y leí el libro Dove escrito por Robin Lee Graham, el niño de California que con sus 16 años soltó amarras para ser la persona más joven en navegar alrededor del mundo a vela. De aquellas no pude adquirir mucho más que el libro y una serie de artículos que publicó el National Geographic, pero cuando salió la película con Deborah Raffin en uno de los papeles estelares ya no hubo marcha atrás, no había nada que hacer... Era todo lo que yo podía soñar, pelo largo, ojos color de avellana y piernas que no acababan jamás. El libro y la película me catapultaron fuera del sofá, y al rededor del mundo varias veces. Mientras veía Maidentrip, me preguntaba si la historia de Laura, tendría el mismo efecto hoy en un adolescente.
I had forgotten the controversy that occurred in Holland when she announced her circumnavigation plans. She was only 14 at the time and a Dutch court stepped in and prevented her from departing, but she won out in the end and set off. When she returned she was 16 years and a handful of months old, still a kid by any measure. She was a few months younger than the previous record holder, the Australian girl Jessica Watson who had solo circumnavigated non-stop via the great southern capes including Cape Horn.
To sail around the world, alone, is a mammoth accomplishment. It’s not easy for so many reasons from the vagaries of wind and weather to the brutal loneliness of complete isolation for extended periods. It takes guts, luck and a special kind of determination to stick with it especially when things get tough. Dekker and Watson both stuck with it and they have my full admiration.
He olvidado la controversia ocurrida en Holanda cuando se anunciaron sus planes de circunnavegación. Laura tenía por entonces solo 14 años y la corte holandesa tomó cartas en el asunto y la previno de sus intenciones... pero finalmente ganó la batalla con la judicatura y pudo soltar amarras. Cuando regresó, tenía 16 años y un puñado de meses, todavía una chiquilla en todos los sentidos. Era unos meses más joven que su predecesora en el record, la australiana Jessica Watson quién circunnavegó la tierra en solitario y sin escalas, siguiendo la ruta de los tres cabos, incluyendo el Cabo de Hornos.
Navegar alrededor del mundo, en solitario, es un reto de mamut. No es fácil por muchas razones; los caprichos del viento y la meteorología, la brutal soledad y el completo aislamiento por largos periodos. Hay que tener agallas, suerte y una determinación muy especial para aguantar, sobre todo cuando las cosas se ponen duras. Dekker y Watson ambas lidiaron con ellas y tienen mi total admiración por ello.
The Guinness Book of World Records, however, no longer has my admiration. Guinness refuses to track the “world’s youngest” attempts so as to not encourage foolhardy behavior. I don’t think what Dekker or Watson did was foolhardy. We have to understand certain things. When you think of a 13, or even 16 year old girl don’t use as your reference the teenagers you normally see frequenting Starbucks at the mall. Some children are different and so much more mature. Dekker was born on a boat and was just 6 when she did her first solo sail. People that grow up living a life of adventure, many of them home schooled, are just so much more worldly than their peers. Dekker and Watson are phenomenal people and their dreams and determination should be celebrated as a pure vein of the human spirit. I say we need a lot more Dekkers and Watsons than we do mall-goers.
Sin embargo, el Libro Guinness de los Records, no tendrá por más tiempo mi admiración al rechazar recopilar los intentos de las circunnavegaciones realizadas por los más jóvenes, y esto por no incentivar un comportamiento temerario. No creo que lo que Dekker o Watson hicieron fuese temerario. Hay que entender ciertas cosas primero... Cuando uno piensas en un muchacho de trece, o incluso de dieciseis años, no debes de usar como referencia los adolescentes que normalmente ves frecuentando el Starbucks del centro comercial. Algunos chicos son diferentes y mucho más maduros. Dekker nació en un barco y tenía solamente seis años cuando hizo su primera navegación en solitario. La gente que nace respirando una vida de aventuras, muchos de ellos educados por sus padres, son mucho más abiertos de expectativas que sus iguales. Dekker y Watson son auténticos fenómenos y sus sueños y determinacion deberían de ser celebrados como filones puros del espíritu humano. Y digo que necesitamos más Dekkers y Watsons que muchachada-centrocomercialera.

The last thing I want to point out is that it has not escaped me that Dekker and Watson are both females. I have been sailing long enough to know (and it’s still true today) when girls were considered so inferior to us men that there was absolutely no place for them on a boat. Ellen MacArthur, who came second in the brutally tough Vendée Globe solo, non-stop around the world race, proved once and for all that women are more than equal, and in many cases far superior than us men. Laura Dekker and Jessica Watson continue to prove that women can do what we for so long thought impossible. How arrogant of men to think this way. And how arrogant are those that would condemn her parents for daring to allow their daughter to dream. I read one online comment that lamented the fact that she had lost a year of school. She may have lost a year of school but she gained a lifetime of memories and along the way inspired a new generation of dreamers, myself included.
La última cosa que quisiera señalar y que no se me ha pasado por alto es que Dekker y Watson son ambas, mujeres. He navegado suficiente como para saber (y esto es todavía cierto hoy) que cuando las chicas son consideradas inferiores a los hombres no hay para ellas un lugar en el barco en absoluto. Ellen MacArthur, quién llegó segunda en la brutalmente dura Vendée Globe vuelta al mundo en solitario y sin escalas, probó de una vez por todas que las chicas son más que iguales, y en muchos casos superiores a nosotros los hombres. Laura Dekker y Jessica Watson continúan probando que las mujeres pueden hacer lo que por mucho tiempo creímos imposible. Que arrogancia la de los hombres para pensar de esa manera. Y que arrogancia también la de aquellos que no tardan en condenar a sus padres por permitir a su hija cumplir sus sueños. Leí un comentario online que lamentaba el hecho de que perdiese un año de colegio. Quizás haya perdido un año de colegio pero ha ganado unas memorias increíbles para el resto de su vida a la vez que ha inspirado una nueva generación de soñadores, yo incluido.
